Convert time to decimal hours here – or let the free AI Time Tracker record your hours and export them.
AI Time Tracker is a desktop app for Mac and Windows that helps you fill in your time card.
Type the hours and minutes as they appear on the clock – for example 2 hours and 30 minutes. The calculator shows the decimal form: 2:30 is 2.50 decimal hours.
Type a decimal value instead – for example 7.75 – and the calculator splits it back into hours and minutes: 7 h 45 min. Both directions update as you type, so you can check values back and forth.
Payroll systems usually add up time in decimal hours, because 7.75 + 2.50 is easier than 7:45 + 2:30. Copy the decimal value into your timesheet or press Print / Save as PDF to keep the conversion with your records.
| Minutes | Decimal | Minutes | Decimal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 min | 0.08 | 30 min | 0.50 |
| 10 min | 0.17 | 35 min | 0.58 |
| 15 min | 0.25 | 40 min | 0.67 |
| 20 min | 0.33 | 45 min | 0.75 |
| 25 min | 0.42 | 50 min | 0.83 |
| — | — | 55 min | 0.92 |
To convert by hand, divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the full hours: 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45/60 = 7.75 decimal hours.

Decimal hours express time as one number in hours, the way payroll and billing systems prefer. Instead of 2 hours 30 minutes you write 2.50, because 30 minutes is half an hour. The part after the dot is always a fraction of an hour, not minutes.
Divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the hours. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45/60 = 7.75 decimal hours. The calculator above does it instantly as you type.
Take the whole hours as they are, then multiply the decimal part by 60 to get minutes. 7.75 is 7 hours and 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes, so 7:45. Type the decimal into the calculator and it splits the value for you.
No – that is the most common decimal-time mistake. 7.50 hours is 7 hours 30 minutes, because 0.50 is half an hour. Seven hours fifty minutes would be 7.83 in decimal. The calculator shows both formats side by side so you can double-check.
Because adding and multiplying plain numbers is simpler than clock arithmetic. 7.75 + 2.50 = 10.25 works on any calculator, while 7:45 + 2:30 needs carrying minutes and hours. Payroll, invoicing and project billing systems almost always expect decimal hours.
Converting clock time to decimal shows two decimal places, the standard for payroll. Converting decimal to minutes rounds to the nearest minute – 0.33 hours comes out as 20 minutes. Some payroll systems round to the nearest quarter hour instead; check which convention yours uses before you copy values over.
This calculator converts one value at a time. To add up a whole week of start and finish times – with breaks, overtime and a total in both formats – use the time card calculator.
